Sacrifice of Sardar Nihal Singh Attariwala

Sardar Nihal Singh Atariwala was a great hero in 18th century and during the times of Sikh Empire whose name is almost forgotten in our history. He was father of our great hero Sardar Sham Singh Atariwala who fought valiantly with British Army. His complete biography will be given sometime later but here I would like to give only an excerpt from his life.

He was one of the best Generals of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji. In 1817, Maharaja Ranjit Singh became very ill. Most efficient doctors were sent but failed. In Gurudwaras, Mosques and Mandirs, everywhere people used to pray for him according to their customs and practices. But there was no improvement in his condition. Finally, Saradar Nihal Singh Ji came and he did Ardaas for Maharaja Ranjit Singh from the core of his heart. Then he went to Maharaja Sahib and did prakarma three times around his bed and then he did Ardas,” Let the disease of Maharaja Ranjit Singh come to me and let him be cured”. (The same thing was done by Emperor Babur for his son Humayun) Then he returned to his village Attari. Soon, after his Ardas, he became ill with the same disease and Maharaja Ranjit Singh on the other hand, was getting better day by day. Finally, in January 1818, Saradar Nihal Singh Ji left for the abode of the Lord, thereby, saving Maharaja’s life.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji the Prophet of Humanity

In 1913, Punjab Historical Society, Lahore organized a seminar on the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Shimla. British Governor of Punjab was the president of seminar. Sardar Joginder Singh, a famous Sikh scholar put light on the life and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Then, Ram Sharan Dass, a famous Hindu leader, said, “Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj was a great reformer of Hindu religion”. Nawab Zulfi Ali Khan, Nawab of Malerkotla, criticized Ram Sharan Dass by saying, “I do not agree with it. Guru Sahib was a great Muslim saint. Bhai Mardana Ji, a low caste Muslim was always with him. His first disciple Rai Bular was a also a Muslim”. Then, the British Governor who was a Christian, said, “I don’t agree with both. I have studied the writings of Guru Sahib and I have no doubt in saying that Guru Sahib was a great Christian Saint”.

This simply shows that Guru Sahib was the prophet not only of Sikhs but for whole humanity. His teachings are for whole humanity not only Sikhs. That’s why this Prophet went to whole world to eradicate Darkness and give the Divine Message of Universal Brotherhood. He went to India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Arab, Africa, Europe, Tibet, China, Russia, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Burma, Myanmar etc.

Shastar Naam Mala Puran

ShastarNaam Mala is one of the famous compositions of Guru Goind Singh Ji. It is a large composition and is from Ang 717 to 808 in Sri Dassam Granth Sahib Ji. It contains names of hundreds of weapons. Main language used is Braj. Punjabi, Persian and Arabian are also used at some palces. It has 1318 chhands which are divided into five chapters.

1. Ath Sri Shastra Naam Mala Puran- It is the first and introductory portion. It has 27 chhands. It contains praise of Almighty in the form of weapons, policies, education, day, night, various avtars etc.

2. Ath Sri Chakra Ke Naam- It contains names of Chakras and has 47 Chhands. It also contains names of swords, spears etc at some places.

3. Ath Sri Baann Ke Naam- It contains names of arrows and has 178 chhands. Many names are associated with those warriors who were either very perfect in archery or were killed with arrow.

4. Ath Sri Paas Ke Naam- It contains names of noose and has 208 chhands.

5. Ath Tupak Ke Naam- It contains names of guns and has 858 chhands. It is the largest of all the chapters.

Unfortunately, the last chapter has no ending statement as in case of previous chapters. So, it seems that this composition is incomplete and we may have lost its other remaining part. This Bani forms a separate Granth like Bachitra Natak, Gian Prabodh , Charitropakhian etc.

We can also find this Bani in various Gutkas published by Nihang Singhs, Hazoor Sahib etc but it is only the first part not all the parts.

As the name suggests, it is a dictionary or list of weapons. But it has much deeper meaning. This Bani is written in such a way that all the names of Shastars or weapons are related to God.

Shastar- weapon

Naam- name, Shabad Guru

Mala- rosary

Puraan- a religious text

So, it is a type of rosary in which beads are the names of weapons as all the weapons are related to God here. So in short, it is a Rosary of Weapons in the form of Words.

This Bani is a Bir rasi Bani (composition which induces bravery in the reader). This fills the heart of reader with bravery and on the same side it makes reader to realize and recognize God within himself and around him everywhere. It asks you to go under the shield of God and realize him everywhere and then fight for mankind fearlessly. The moment you realize that Almighty God is the only Super Power and is within you, with you at every step, then you become fearless and get ready to fight for mankind, brotherhood, Truth and Justice.

An interesting fact about this writing is that till now there is no any such writing which has list of weapons in whole India, perhaps not even in the whole world.

I would like to write down those verses which are very famous among Shastar Vidya or Gatka players and various scholars from the first chapter.

As (sword), Kripan (sword), Khanda, Khadag (sword), Tupak (gun), Tabar (hatched), Teer (arrow), Saif (sword), Sarohi and Saihathi, all these are our adorable seniors.3. Thou are the Teer (arrow), Thou are Saihathi (spear), Thou art Tabar (hatchet), and Talwaar (sword); he, who remembers Thy Name crosses the dreadful ocean of existence.4. Thou art the KAL (death), thou art the goddess Kali, Thou art the sword and arrow, Thou art the sign of victory today and Thou art the Hero of the world.5.

I apologize for any mistake and thanks to www.searchgurbani.com for meanings.

Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji- Jag Ki Chaadar

A very few days ago, Shaheedi Purab of Guru Tegh Bahdaur Patshah Ji passed. Guru Patshah sacrificed his life not his family, friends, country, not even Sikhs but for whole humanity.
Guru Gobind Singh Ji accounts it in his autobiography as

He protected the forehead mark and sacred thread (of Hindus) which marked a great event in the Iron Age. For the sake of saints, he laid down his head without even a sigh.13. For the sake of Dharma, he sacrificed himself. He laid down his head but not his creed. The Saints of the Lord abhor the performance of miracles and malpractices.14. (Sri Dassam Granth Sahib Ji, Ang 131)

Breaking the potsherd of his body, head of king of Delhi (Aurangzeb), He left for the abode of Lord.15. The whole world bemoaned the departure of Tegh Bahadur. The whole world grieved at the Guru's departure but the gods hailed at the Guru's arrival in Heavens.16.(Sri Dassam Granth Sahib Ji, Ang 131)

It is the law of Guru Nanak's Darbar that no one will go empty handed from Guru's Darbar.

But there is a common misinterpretation of Guru Sahib as "Hind Ki Chaadar" or "Shield for Hindus". (Explanation for this misinterpretation will be given soon in some future post). Guru Sahib was Guru not only of Sikhs but for whole world.

He could have laid down his life even if Muslims would have been in same situation.

When Emperor Aurangzeb asked Guru Sahib, "Why do you need to sacrifice for Hindus"? Guru Sahib replied, " O Aurangzeb, if Muslims were also tortured in the same way to embrace another religion and if they had came to me, then I would have done the same for them".

Guru Sahib laid down his life not for Hindus but for whole Humanity.

Sainapati, one of the 52 poets of Guru Gobind Singh Ji's court, calls Guru Sahib as "Jag Ki Chaadar" or "Shield for Humanity".

Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib appeared. Sheild for whole Humanity. Who protected Karma and Dharma. In the Dark Age.14. He became famous in the whole world. Who saved all religions. All the Three Worlds, started singing His praises. Satguru saved the weaker ones in this way.

(Sri Gur Sobha, Page 10-11)

So, Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji should be called as "Jag Ki Chaadar" or "Shield for Humanity" not as "Hind Ki Chaadar" or "Shield for Hindus".

Name of Guru Nanak Sahib Ji

Today on the occasion of Prakash Utsav of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, I would like to write about why only name ‘Nanak’ was given to Guru Patshah Ji.

After 13 days of Prakash of Guru Sahib, Pandits (Priests) chose name Nanak for Guru Sahib.

Give the name Nanak to the child. No other name can be equivalent to this.

But Mehta Kalu, father of Guru Sahib was disappointed and said this name belongs to both Hindus and Muslims. I will not accept this name.

He asked for some other name.

Priest replied this child will be adored by Hindus, Muslims and the whole world.

He will ‘shine’ in the whole world.

(Note:- All these references are from Sri Nanak Prakash by Bhai Santokh Singh Ji)

This was reality this child became the King of the whole world. He is respected not only by the Sikhs but by the whole world.

That's why some European writer wrote " If Guru Nanak Sahib would have born in Europe, then whole world would have only one religion Sikhism."

He became Pir for Muslims and Guru for Hindus.

Diwali

Today, you might be very busy in preparing for celebrations of Diwali in buying gifts, candles, crackers, delicious sweets, greeting friends and relatives etc. In the evening, everyone will be lighting candles etc and then get busy with crackers. But is this the way to celebrate Diwali according to Gurmat?

Read the below Shabad from Bhai Gurdass Ji’s Vaar:

Lamps lighted in the night of Diwali burn out. Stars of different variety appear and glow and disappear in dawn from the sky. In the gardens the flowers are there which were selectively plucked and their beauty disappears. The pilgrims going to pilgrimage centers are also seen and lose their gaiety. The imaginary habitats have been seen coming into being and vanishing. All these are momentary, but the Gurmukhs with the help of the Shabad nourish the gift of the pleasure fruit.(6) (Bhai Gurdass Ji, Vaar 19, Pauri 6).

But what do we do? Just waste large lumps of money in gifts, crackers, sweets, thus enjoying momentary pleasure and call it as our Sikh festival, without understanding its deep concept which is written above by Bhai Sahib Ji. Raagis also display the above message in incorrect form as they themselves have not understood their meaning.

Once on Diwali night, Singhs have done Deepmala by lighting hundreds of Deewas(Lamps). It was an awesome scene. On the other hand, Sant Baba Bishan Singh Ji Murralewale was in his deep meditation. Singhs asked Baba Ji to come outside and see the scene of hundreds of candles lighting. Baba Ji replied these lamps will burn out after some time and their emitting light will be no more. I have no interest in these lamps and light. I can see the light of number of Suns combined within myself and this light will remain forever. So, I will not be coming outside.

Baba Ji did not came out and kept on enjoying His Eternal Light inside him. So lets celebrate Diwali by enjoying Eternal Pleasure like him according to True Gurmat.

Siri Kaal Ji Ki Ustat- Bachitra Natak

Siri Kaal Ji Ki Ustat is the first chapter of Bachitra Natak in Dasam Granth. Bachitra Natak is the autobiography of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Orignally, Bachitra Natak is the largest composition of Dasam Granth constituting 634 pages. Various other Banis like Chandi Charitra (both), Chaubis Avtar , Brahma Avtar and Rudra Avtar also form its parts. That’s why Dasam Granth was also known as Bachitra Natak by Puratan Singhs of 18th sentury. So, autobiography part of Guru Sahib forms the introduction part of all other Banis written above.

But now, we call Bachitra Natak only to the autobiography part of Guru Sahib. Other Banis written above are considered as separate Banis though we agree that they are basically a part of Bachitra Natak. So, the Bachitra Natak (autobiography of Guru Gobind Singh Ji) contains 14 chapters and the first chapter is Siri Kaal Ji Ki Ustat.

It contains 101 verses and 6 types of Chhands or styles are used. Swayas are also used in it. In this part, as the name suggests Guru Sahib writes about the glory and greatness of Waheguru .

Siri Kaal Ji- a manifestation of Sri Waheguru in form of All-Destructor

Ustat – praise.

So, it means glory of the God.

Please don’t relate Kaal with Shiv or Kaali godess or some other Devi.

He is indestructible Power which protects Saints and punishes wicked.

The sword (Energy or Shakti) hacks and breaks ruthlessly into pieces and destroys the hordes of fools and adorns the battlefield. It is like a long unbreakable forceful arm. Its awesome splendour overshadows the lustre of the Sun. It looks after the welfare of the Saints and punishes the wicked. It destroys the sins and I seek Its refuge. Hail, hail to the Creator of the world, the Saviour of the creation. My protector Scimitar, hail to Thee.(2)

This Power or Shakti is formless, shapeless, timeless and endless. This simply means that this Shakti is Sri Waheguru.

He has no complexion, no streak, no pigment and no music. He is nameless and place less but His prominent halo is a glow. He has no rancour, no dress. He is formless and perpetual. He is a Supreme Yogi of all yogis and is extremely immaculate.(5) He is invincible, dauntless, nameless and abode less.He is the super Yogi among yogis and is the magnificent gratifier of intense passions. He is unaccountable, garb less, innumerable and without a beginning. He is beyond our reach, is sacred and uncontroversial. (6) He is the Origin of all but has no Origin. He is countless and endless. He is spite less, costume less and is the supreme Lord of the Universe. He has no rage; He does not wither away. He has neither rancour, nor infatuation.He has neither desire, nor wrath. He is unborn and invisible.(7)

He created sweat-born creatures, placental mammals and earth-born vegetable kingdom. He produced egg-born creatures and thus composed all the continents and the Universes. He created directions and semi-directions (corners), the earth and the sky. He narrated four Vedas, the Koran and the Puranas.(24). He made the night and the day and installed the sun and the moon. He created demigods and demons and produced numerous warriors. He prepared the tablet and pen of divine decrees and recorded the writ of destiny on the forehead of all. He has subjugated all with his mighty and deadly hands.(25). The Immortal Lord erased many, He created and made many. He uprooted and forged many, again He destroyed and produced them None can comprehend the operations of the Lord of Destruction. It shall happen to the multitude and it has happened to the populace in the past.(26) He created millions of trivial Krishnas. He destroyed many Ramas and then produced them. Many Mohammeds existed on this earth. As and when the time of their doom drew near, all of them perished.(27) All the holy saints (Muslim) and prophets who existed in the past; They were conquered by Death but they could not defeat the Lord of Death. All the incarnations of Vishnu like Rama and Krishna were originated, They were consumed by Death but they could not destroy Death.(28.) As many Indras and moons have come into being, All of them were devoured by Kal (death) but they could not annihilate Kal.

Everyone who comes to the Earth is conquered by Death. But those who come under their protection are saved.

A good many Ramas incarnated but all of them ultimately passed away. A good many Krishnas came to this world, all of them departed in the end.(70) As gods will come into being, they will all breathe out ultimately. A great many Budha incarnates came into existence, ultimately all perished.(71) All Indras who came, reached their end. All the demon kings were grabbed by Death.(72) Even Nar Singh (the man-lion-fourth incarnation of Vishnu-who killed Harnakas) was also destroyed by Death. Eminent Rulers were all butchered by the oppressive Death.(73) Vaman (Dwart) Incarnation in the guise of a Brahman, was also eliminated by Death. Wide-mouthed Fish Incarnation also fell into the noose of Death.(74) Those who came into being, were all conquered by Death. Those who seek his refuge He always saves them.(75)

Manglacharan- Prayer before beginning

It is my first post in my blog, so I decided to begin up with a Manglacharan. Manglacharan is a starting prayer. It is basically read before starting any task. In olden days, before beginning up with any work like writing a book, studying, going for work, preparing for war, Katha etc, it was a tradition to read the starting prayer. Manglacharan may be any Shabad(s) or simply Mool Mantra or just Waheguru. This practice has been forgotten among us in our everyday life. This practice is not compulsory or some kind of restriction for us but it is a way of living under the Umbrella of Almighty.

Salok:

The Divine Guru or Waheguru is my True mother, the Divine Guru is my True father [He gives Spiritual birth]; the Divine Guru is my Transcendent Lord and Master. The Divine Guru is my True friend as He is the Destroyer of ignorance; the Divine Guru is my True relative and brother. The Divine Guru is the Giver, He is the Teacher of the Lord's Name. The Divine Guru is the Mantra which never fails. The Divine Guru is the Image of peace, truth and wisdom. The Divine Guru is the Philosopher's Stone - touching it, one is transformed and it is best than any other such stone. The Divine Guru is the True sacred shrine of pilgrimage, and the pool of divine ambrosia or Divine nectar; bathing in the Guru's wisdom, one experiences the Infinite Power and no any other pilgrimage can be compared to it. The Divine Guru is the Creator, and the Destroyer of all sins; the Divine Guru is the Purifier of sinners. The Divine Guru existed at the primal beginning, throughout the ages, in each and every age. The Divine Guru is the Mantra of the Lord's Name; chanting it, one is saved. O God, please be merciful to me, that I may be with the Divine Guru; I am a foolish sinner, but holding onto Him, I am carried across. The Divine Guru is the True Guru, the Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord; Nanak salutes to the Lord, the Divine Guru. (1)
